The Australian Medical Aid Team Youth Committee (AUSLMAT Youth Committee) is a dynamic, youth-led branch of the broader Australian Medical Aid Team, established last year with a shared mission of improving the health and wellbeing of communities in Sri Lanka. While closely aligned with the goals of the parent committee, the Youth Committee distinguishes itself by engaging a younger demographic, primarily individuals in their 20s. It serves as a platform for emerging professionals and students to contribute meaningfully to humanitarian efforts, while also fostering leadership, collaboration, and social connection among like-minded peers.
A core focus of the AUSLMAT Youth Committee is building a strong, supportive community. Through collaboration with other committees and organisations, the group aims to create opportunities for young people to connect, exchange ideas, and work collectively toward impactful causes. This vision extends beyond traditional volunteering, with an emphasis on hosting social and professional events that cultivate both personal and professional growth, as well as a shared sense of purpose.
In its inaugural year, the committee successfully organised a Careers Expo that brought together professionals from diverse fields including medicine, engineering, and business. The event provided attendees with valuable networking opportunities through interactive booths, allowing for direct engagement with experienced individuals. Alongside this, a series of presentations covered a wide range of topics, from the role of mindfulness in mental health to practical advice on career development and navigating post-graduate employment. With food and refreshments contributing to a welcoming atmosphere, the event not only informed but also fostered meaningful connections within the community.
Funds raised through the Careers Expo and additional fundraising initiatives were directed toward supporting relief efforts following the Cyclone Ditwah floods in Sri Lanka, demonstrating the committee’s commitment to responding to urgent humanitarian needs. Building on this foundation, the AUSLMAT Youth Committee has set its sights on supporting Lama Piyasa this year, an organisation dedicated to providing housing, education, and psychological support for children in vulnerable circumstances. Through continued advocacy, fundraising, and community engagement, the committee strives to make a lasting and meaningful impact both locally and abroad.
